Congrats on the DSLR! (here is a little advice
First thing you have to do, is take photos of everything! If you have a upgraded from a compact to a DSLR you have to get used to it! Photos don't just get better because we have a better camera, but a better camera will enable you to explore different settings and has wider ranges of settings to manipulate. So you have to know really well your camera, avoid the P (program mode). Practise focusing, practise different shutters, F values ISO, find the best combinations for Shutter, F and ISO values, mess you the white balance... there's such a new wonderful world to discover...
So my advice, and I own a DSLR for 1 year and a few months (and I still find out new stuff once in a while), Take photos all the time, even if you delete them right after, but learn your camera.
As NIKE says, JUST DO IT!
